Blended, not juiced
There is no juicer here, just a blender. Whole apples, fresh ginger and lemon are blended with cold water, so you choose the texture: pour it as it is for a thicker drink, or strain it for a lighter one. Over plenty of ice, it is sweet, sharp and gently spicy.

Instructions
- Wash and core the apples and cut them into chunks. If you want apple slices to garnish, cut a few thin slices first and set them aside. Peel the ginger and squeeze the lemon.
- Put the apple chunks, ginger, lemon juice and cold water in a blender. Blend until as smooth as your blender will make it, 45 to 60 seconds.
- Taste. For a sweeter drink, add up to 1 teaspoon of honey and blend for a few seconds more.
- Leave the pulp in for a thicker drink that keeps more of the apples' fiber, or pour it through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing gently, for a lighter, smoother drink.
- Fill two glasses with ice and pour in the drink. Garnish with apple or lemon slices, mint or a cinnamon stick if you like, and serve straight away.
Tips & notes
- Sweet apples such as Gala or Fuji give a mellow drink; tart ones such as Granny Smith give a sharper one.
- Ginger is spicy. If you are unsure, start with a smaller piece and add more next time.
- Even strained, the drink stays a little cloudy. It is a blended fruit drink, not a clear juice.
- Fresh apple darkens as it stands. The lemon slows this down but does not stop it, so serve it soon after blending.
- For the coldest drink, chill the apples and water before blending.
- Storage: best fresh. Refrigerate in a covered jar for up to 24 hours and shake or stir before serving, as it separates as it stands.
- Do not give honey to children under 12 months old.

FAQ
Do I have to strain this drink?
No. Straining is up to you. With the pulp left in, the drink is thicker and keeps more of the apples' fiber. Strained, it is lighter and smoother.
Is this a juice or a smoothie?
Somewhere in between. With the pulp in, it drinks like a thin smoothie; strained, it is closer to a juice.
Does an apple ginger drink detox your body?
No drink has been shown to detox the body; your liver and kidneys already do that work. This is simply a refreshing way to drink fruit, ginger and water.
